HISTORY OF THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN DOGS AND HUMANS
Evidence points to the fact that dogs genetically developed from wolf ancestors at least 15,000 years ago.
Ancient cultures dating around 14,000 years ago began treating dogs like members of the tribe. This became evident upon the discovery that in many ancient cemeteries dogs were buried in the same graves as humans. This profound alliance between humans and dogs occurred because dogs naturally follow a social hierarchy and easily accept people as members of their pack. In addition, dogs are team players that generally strive to please humans.
The partnership between man and dogs in ancient days provided many benefits for both species. The chances of survival for both species were greatly increased by the cohabitation of dogs and humans. Dogs, with keen senses of hearing would have alerted people to the presence of predators or strangers. It is believed the most significant benefit to man would have been the dog’s sensitive sense of smell to assist in the hunt for food. Dog’s may have also provided warmth for humans, which is portrayed in the old saying “three dog night”.
During the late 1800’s and early 1900’s, the bonding between humans and dogs continued to grow stronger, particularly within the wealthy class and the royals in countries within Europe and other parts of the world. Prior to the 1970’s many dogs were kept outside and were provided dog houses for shelter. From the 1980’s to the present day, we continued to see significant changes in the role of the pet dog with our families within our homes. The bond between people and dogs has become so strong that dogs actively shape the way a family lives within their homes. The dogs that are indoor pets have, in most cases, learned to conform to human expectations and standards. Most families have adapted to include their dogs into the everyday routine and patterns of the family. Many dogs now live their life as human children. Clothes, perfumes, doggie daycares & spas, dog parks, dog trainers, groomers, dog therapists, dog cafes and hotels, dog airlines, dog cemeteries, dog furniture and this list will continue to grow. Human family members are engaging in more activities each year which are based around the family dog’s perceived needs and interest.

OUR FAVORITE QUOTES FROM DOG LOVERS
“Let’s examine the dog mind: Every time you come home, he thinks it’s amazing. He can’t believe that you’ve accomplished this again. You walk in the door. The joy of it almost kills him. “He’s back again! It’s that guy! It’s that guy!”
~ Jerry Seinfeld ~
“Like many other much-loved humans, they believed that they owned their dogs, instead of realizing that their dogs owned them.”
~ Dodie Smith, 101 Dalmatians ~
“Getting a dog is like getting married. It teaches you to be less self-centered, to accept sudden, surprising outbursts of affections, and not to be upset by a few scratches on your car.”
~ Will Stanton ~
“I talk to him when I’m lonesome like; and I’m sure he understands. When he looks at me so attentively, and gently licks my hands; then he rubs his nose on my tailored clothes, but I never say naught thereat. For the good Lord knows I can buy more clothes, but never a friend like that.”
~ W. Dayton Wedgefarth ~
“I think dogs are the most amazing creatures; they give unconditional love. For me they are the role model for being alive.”
~ Gilda Radner ~
“Dogs love company. They place it first in their short list of needs.”

“The more I see the representatives of the people, the more I love my dogs.”
~ Alphonse De Lamartine ~
“It's no coincidence that man's best friend cannot talk.“

“Dogs laugh, but they laugh with their tails. What puts man in a higher state of evolution is that he has got his laugh on the right end.“
~ Max Eastman ~
